Nestled on Chiltern Street in the heart of Marylebone, Shreeji Newsagents has been a beloved institution since 1982, when Sandeep Garg took ownership. What began as a traditional local newsagent - stocking sweets, tobacco, and everyday papers - has evolved under Garg's passionate stewardship into London's premier destination for curated independent magazines, rare publications, and niche titles spanning art, fashion, design, and culture.
Garg has transformed Shreeji into a vibrant culture concept store. An iconic 2020 renovation, in collaboration with designer Gabriel Chipperfield, introduced plush reading rooms, a coffee and pastry bar, and intimate event spaces, creating an inviting haven where visitors linger over discoveries.
Today, Shreeji hosts exhibitions, launches, and activations with global brands, drawing a discerning crowd of creatives and locals alike. As neighbours to the newest Oliver Spencer store on Chiltern Street, Shreeji embodies the area's timeless charm and community spirit, making it the perfect spot for serendipitous finds and meaningful connections.
Hi Sandeep, why don't you introduce yourself?
Hi, I'm Sandeep Garg, founder of Shreeji Newsagents. We've been here in Marylebone since 1982.
What's your insider tip for anyone coming to Shreeji for the first time?
Don't just buy what you came in for. Ask us for suggestions - we love helping people discover something they never expected to leave with. And also to keep an eye on our events calendar. We're fundamentally a newsagent and print shop, but we also host exciting events throughout the year. Keep an eye on our events calendar. Next year, look out for something fun with Disney and Chaos magazine, where characters will come to life, and a film activation with Penguin Books.
What's your personal style?
I really value comfort in what I wear, but fit is very important, especially as a shorter person. What I'm wearing today - the shirt and the short jacket - the fit is perfect for me, and they're both easy to pair with jeans. It's a relaxed look with a smart edge, which is what I like.
What's your favourite thing about this time of year?
Definitely the chance to wind down, enjoy myself, and spend time with friends and family. London at Christmas is magical, largely because of the architecture. Iconic buildings like the Tower of London and the Natural History Museum look stunning, and crossing the Thames gives you that unique perspective of the city on both sides - it's truly special.
What's your Christmas message?
Around Christmas, it's a time of giving and sharing with others. As human beings, we've proven we can come back from adversity again and again, and there's always hope to improve and build a better life. My wish for the new year is for more certainty, fewer global problems, calmer times ahead, and good health for everyone.
What's one memory you have of your time at Shreeji that really stands out?
Probably working with Virgil Abloh when he launched System magazine here during his collaboration with IKEA on a catalogue. He was one of the nicest people I've ever met, and that moment changed how we see our business and what it can mean to people.
