How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe for Autumn

How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe for Autumn

Let's face it, most of us deploy a bit of a scattergun approach to buying clothes. We see something we like. We buy it. But more often than not we don't give to much consideration to how it will complement the rest of our wardrobe. Sure, we might have an outfit in mind, but beyond that we're winging it! It can often help to think about your wardrobe in terms of smaller capsule collections, which allows you to create categories of clothing. For example, you might have a preppy capsule, or a streetwear capsule, or a tailored capsule. That way, whenever you're making a new purchase, you can think about how it will interact within its own capsule.

Oli thinks about his collections in much the same way, producing a seasonal wardrobe that is designed to feel like a complete capsule, with every element designed to work with one another. One aspect we've built up over the years is our 'Essentials', those ever-dependable timeless garments that tend to be able to glue all of your different capsules together. As we slowly head into Autumn, these kind of garments become increasingly important given the need to blend seasons, so the following is a capsule we've created to ensure a smooth transition into August.

Shirts

A great shirt is an essential part of a versatile wardrobe because it lends itself to many different styles of dressing. Whether you prefer a casually tailored approach, a workwear-inspired aesthetic, or even a streetwear style, a good shirt is a great garment to build the rest of your look around. This season we've created a plethora of really versatile styles with varying collars, from our classic New York Special to the collarless Grandad shirt. Brushed cotton and denim styles are excellent for bringing a subtle element of texture to your fits and transition nicely into autumn. Overshirts are also another really handy garment to have at your disposal this time of year as they can be used as an outer layer or can be worn beneath a jacket when the cooler days of autumn turn up.

Trousers

This season, we've introduced a new trouser silhouette called the Orsman which is a wide-leg style that takes inspiration from 70s shapes. It's a great autumnal style, and features single pleats for a casually tailored finish. We crafted them in a few different fabrics, from midweight cotton to super soft wool. They come in understated colours such as green, grey and navy in order to make them assimilate with your wardrobe easily and effectively.

Jackets

This period between summer and autumn always calls for short jackets, especially the unstructured style that feel and wear more like overshirts. One of our perennial favourites is our Hythe jacket, a beautiful contemporary iteration of a classic four-pocket chore jacket. We've crafted it in a few different cotton fabrics, from a stunning indigo-dyed iteration with a herringbone pattern to a lightweight linen style that drapes like a dream. A great investment piece for autumn style is our suede Hardwick jacket in a rich chocolate brown tone. Cut in a bomber shape but with a turn-down collar for an elevated look, it features two patch pockets with one flat chest pocket. When you want to elevate your fits with luxury texture, this is the one to reach for.

Jersey

From simple tees to preppy half-zip pullovers, soft jersey garments are the glue that binds your autumnal casualwear together. The t-shirt, it goes without saying, is one of the hardest working pieces in your wardrobe, and it always pays to have a good rotation of high quality cotton styles in various muted tones, plus a couple of striped options. Jersey knits are an underrated genre, but are having something of a revival due to the rise of the modern preppy trend. Tops like half-zips and quarter zips are excellent layering pieces to wear under Oli's relaxed tailored jackets, or they can be worn over a classic button-down brushed cotton shirt.
