Weekend Escapes: Oli's three getaways and what to wear to them

Looking for a spring escape before the summer kicks in proper? Whether you're after some Mediterranean sun or a bit of urban culture closer to home, Oli has selected three of his favourite places to visit right now, and exactly what to wear when you get there.

Paris

There is no better city for a weekend getaway. Paris is wonderful for so many reasons (even the surly waiters are comedy gold) but especially the architecture. It's a city that was designed to be marvelled at, with so many jaw-dropping buildings and public landmarks around every quarter. My recommendation is to check in at the Hôtel Le Burgundy on Rue Duphot in the 1er (it's not cheap but you'll thank me for it) then spend your day mulling life's great questions on the Left Bank with a pastis or five, followed by dinner at the legendary and unapologetically French Chez Paul on rue de Charonne in the Bastille. Then hop over to the Marais and see what mischief you can find.

Cornwall

Everyone knows about Cornwall in the summer but in spring it is truly glorious. Bereft of the visiting hordes, my favourite place to visit is St Mawes, a small village opposite Falmouth on the Roseland Peninsula on the south coast of Cornwall. Hotel Tresanton, run by Olga Polizzi, is a great base to explore the area from, although the harbour views from the Idle Rocks hotel is hard to beat. Gourmands will be in their element in St. Mares. There are some great restaurants (the Watch House is worth a visit) but if you make your way down to Porthcurnick Beach you'll find the Hidden Hut (not that hidden) serving up first-rate soups, chowders and grilled seafood. Evenings should be spent back at the harbour in the Rising Sun, watching the sun ironically going down as a pint or two slips back.

Santorini

It's virtually impossible to choose one Greek Island over the other - they are all so different in myriad ways, but if you just want to completely unwind for a long weekend then I would choose Santorini. The Oia side of the island is postcard perfect with incredible views of the sunken caldera just across the water, and the hotels carved into the jagged slopes... well you've all seen the pictures. My bet would be to stay at Katikies or Canaves if you want to splash out, then venture out to the town in the evening and seek out Skala restaurant for the best seafood you've ever had.
