The Lothian Coat: A Loden, Loosened

Every winter wardrobe needs one coat that does the heavy lifting, and for autumn/winter 26 we have built ours around a very old idea. The Lothian is based on the traditional Loden coat, the stalwart of Tyrolean hunting lodges and Viennese coffee houses. But where the original was made to withstand harsh Austrian winters, the Lothian is a more cosmopolitan iteration for a modern discerning wardrobe.

The silhouette is quietly architectural. A raglan sleeve softens the line of the shoulder, and a dart at the back lets the coat fall naturally from it, so the cloth drapes naturally. You sense the structure more than you see it: considered, but never rigid.

The details reward a second look. The main one is a storm guard at the neck, a practical flap against wind and weather that also helps the proportions by balancing the generous volume of the coat's upper half. Nothing is there for decoration; every detail earns its place.

The Lothian comes in three versions across two fabrics, all made in the UK. Hepple Brown is the tweedier choice: a brown houndstooth check in a wool-cotton blend, with the warmth of a country weekend and enough polish to hold its own in town. For those whose winters are measured in commutes rather than grouse moors, Marling Graphite and Marling Khaki are cut from a technical, weather-resistant cotton made to keep you warm and dry through the next six months. It's the Loden's old knack for shrugging off rain, updated for the city.

Choosing between them is really a matter of temperament. The check says heritage; the technical cottons say practicality. Either way, the Lothian shows that a coat can be substantial without being stiff, which is exactly what you want come November.
