The Conduit Classic: A Shirt For When It Matters

The Conduit Classic: A Shirt For When It Matters

If you've been an Oliver Spencer customer for a while, you've probably got a good handle on our relaxed, modern aesthetic, particularly our approach to tailoring. Our shirt collection abides by the same modus operandi, with an emphasis on soft fabrics and off-duty silhouettes. We're not a formal shirtmaker - we'll leave that to the excellent tailors on Jermyn Street and Savile Row - but one shirt we do produce sits at the smarter end of the spectrum, structured enough for the moments that count, yet relaxed enough to feel like something you could wear day in, day out.

At its core, the Conduit Classic is built on our house block: a consistent, familiar regular fit that returning customers already know and trust. It’s neither boxy nor skinny, but properly proportioned - room through the chest and shoulders, with a hem that sits right whether you’re tucking or going untucked (or even a cheeky French tuck!). That reliability matters.

The details of the Conduit Classic do the heavy lifting. A spread collar gives it versatility: wear it open for an easy, lived-in look or add a tie when the occasion demands. Removable collar stiffeners let you dial the sharpness up or down. Then there are the clean double-button cuffs which offer a touch more formality than their single-button cousins.
Fabric choices keep things interesting without veering into novelty. Crisp whites sit alongside soft blues, creams, and navies. Many are cut from organic cotton or ecological fabrics that feel substantial yet breathable - nothing paper-thin or overly slippery. Textures vary just enough: some with a smooth, refined hand, others with a touch more character that rewards closer inspection. The result is a shirt that works harder than its clean lines suggest.

A shirt doesn’t have to be white to command respect. Texture, tone, and cloth do the work. The Conduit Classic proves the point across its range. Take the Bridford White or Mayhew White for classic purity. Pair the Nash Blue or Perkins Blue with khaki Orsman trousers for an effortless smart-casual uniform. The Collins White/Blue stripe adds subtle pattern, while richer options like the Coney Navy or Hart Cream bring depth that holds its own with tailoring or can elevate a pair of denim jeans.

Wear it open over a tee on a weekend, with the collar stiffeners in for a touch of definition. Button it fully and slip on a lightweight blazer for client meetings. Layer under a knit in cooler months or let it breathe solo when the sun appears. It’s modern tailoring in the best sense: thoughtful construction that respects tradition without being trapped by it. Whether you’re dressing for the boardroom, the bar, or somewhere in between, the Conduit Classic delivers without demanding attention. It simply performs. And in an era of endless choice, that reliability feels quietly luxurious.
