How To Buy A Suit Online

How To Buy A Suit Online

Buying a suit online can feel a bit like a leap of faith. You know what you want it to do -make you look sharp, feel comfortable, and actually get worn more than twice a year - but the fear of it arriving stiff, boxy, two sizes wrong, or a different hue to what you saw online is real. We're here to change that. At Oliver Spencer, we’ve spent years quietly rebelling against traditional tailoring. Our suits aren’t about rigid structure or looking like you’re heading to a boardroom in 1997. They’re about soft, unstructured silhouettes that move with you, breathe with you, and slip seamlessly into the rest of your wardrobe, so we've put together this no-nonsense guide to buying one online with confidence.

What Makes an Oliver Spencer Suit Different

It’s not the silhouette that sets our suits apart, it’s the deconstruction. We use soft, unstructured shoulders that follow the natural line of your body rather than imposing a shape. There’s canvas or padding, which means the jacket drapes naturally and gives you proper ease of movement. You can actually raise your arms without feeling like you’re in a straitjacket. Our suits are designed to integrate into an existing wardrobe. Wear the jacket with jeans and a T-shirt on Friday. Pair the trousers with a knit polo for a smart-casual lunch. The whole look feels like clothing, not costume. In short: a suit that doesn’t feel like one. That’s our promise.

Start With Purpose - Why Do You Actually Need This Suit?

Before you click “add to bag,” ask yourself one simple question: what’s this suit for? In most cases, you'll whittle it down to the following three answers:

Wedding (guest, groom, or destination affair)
You’ll want something versatile that travels well and won’t crease like mad. Our lightweight cotton-blend, linen, or tropical wool options in soft neutrals or classic navy and charcoal work brilliantly. The tropical wool suits are especially good at remaining crease-free thanks to the high-twist yarns, but if you're going for linen we say embrace the crumple - it's what gives linen suiting that nonchalant appeal.

Work / Everyday Tailoring
For the creative office or days when you want to look intentional without trying too hard, go for easy separates or suits with a modern shape. The Wilkes Sand Westbury or Eastman Navy Westbury are perfect — soft enough for all-day wear, smart enough for meetings. Then there's the 'alternative' suits such as the Hilliard Bradwell or the Edale suit, which riff on workwear jacket shapes.

Casual And Social
Modern tailoring that dresses down beautifully. Think the Ludbrook Beige Edale or Miro Black Edale from our Liberty Collection. These are suits you can wear to dinner, gallery openings, or even with trainers if that's your vibe. The Kennard suit is another great style that sees the classic blazer replaced with a modern short jacket.

The beauty of our unstructured approach is adaptability. One good Oliver Spencer suit can genuinely cover multiple bases.

Finding Your Size (Yes, You Can Do This at Home)

Sizing a suit online doesn’t need to be intimidating. Start with three key measurements you can take yourself with a soft tape measure:

Chest: Wrap the tape under your arms, across the fullest part of your chest and shoulder blades. Keep it snug but not tight - you should be able to slide two fingers underneath comfortably. The chest measurement is the most important because it gives the best indication of shoulder width, which is the parameter that most tailors can't really alter.

Waist: Measure around your natural waist (usually just above where you wear your belt). Again, allow a little breathing room.

Inside Leg: Stand straight and measure from the top of your inside leg (where the crotch seam would sit) down to where you want the trouser hem to break on your shoe - usually the top of the heel.

Our suits are cut with a relaxed, contemporary fit, but remember: sizing is never the final answer. If something doesn’t feel quite right when it arrives, that’s completely normal. We're all slightly different shapes and sizes, even if we do conform to the same suit size. That's where alterations come in...

Fit And Alterations - Let’s Be Honest

No off-the-peg suit is ever perfect for everyone. But most of the time, a few thoughtful alterations turn a very good suit into your suit. We’re upfront about this. Our jackets and trousers are designed with enough ease to allow simple adjustments: sleeve shortening, waist take-in, or trouser hemming. We offer a full alterations service in our London stores, and we’re happy to recommend a good local tailor wherever you are. If you’re in the UK, pop into one of our shops (Marylebone, Soho, Shoreditch or Bloomsbury) for a proper fitting. Many customers order online first, try on at home, then bring it in so that we can measure up in store and get the alterations done for you. We also have a Trouser Fit Guide on the site that breaks down our different silhouettes so you can choose the one that suits your shape and style best.

Building the Full Look

A suit is only as good as what you wear with it. Most of the time, you'll likely pair your suit with a shirt, and the formality of that shirt largely depends on the occasion, but given our suits have a pretty relaxed attitude, you're unlikely to ever wear a formal dress shirt. Our shirt collection has been designed with our tailoring in mind, with a variety of collar styles that move the slider on the smart casual spectrum. Our Heavyweight t-shirts, polos, and short-sleeve shirts are all excellent options for spring and summer, too, dialling back the smartness in favour of a more laid-back aesthetic.

No matter how much you've nailed all of the above, footwear can make it or break it. Loafers and derbies are our preferred choice with our suits since they have a smart-casual synergy, but sleek lo-fi sneakers can be a great option too. Just remember that the goal is to create a look that feels like you, not like you’ve borrowed someone else’s uniform.

Returns And Support - Your Safety Net

We want you to buy with zero pressure, which is why our returns policy is simple: 14 days from receipt to return or exchange, as long as the garment is in its original condition with tags attached. Free shipping on orders over £150 helps too. If something doesn’t feel right - the colour in real life is off, the fit needs tweaking, or you’re just not sure - send it back. No awkward questions. We’d much rather you end up with something you love. UK customers: you’re always welcome to order online and collect in-store the same day, or bring pieces in for expert advice.
