Terry's All Gold

If there's one fabric that makes us think of lounging by the pool on holiday in the Med, it's terry towelling. Who can forget 1964's Goldfinger film featuring a Sean Connery dressed in a baby blue belted playsuit made of terry cloth? Now while we probably wouldn't advocate wearing the same today (at least not in public), the fact is terry cloth is still an amazing summer fabric, being both effortlessly casual, wonderfully tactile, and actually functional when a swimming pool is in the equation, thanks to its excellent absorbency and quick drying properties. 

First developed in France, terry cloth dates back to the mid-1800s and was originally woven from silk, meaning it was a real premium fabric back in its early days. Over the next half century it would evolve to the terry cloth we’re more familiar with today – soft, refined and defined by its absorbent qualities.

The loose piling effect created in the weave process is what makes it so absorbent, but beyond the practicalities of the cloth, it's incredibly cool on the eye and injects a nice dose of textural interest into your look.

Terry Cloth Loungewear

While the poolside is the perfect environment for terry cloth, it's not the only place it feels at home. In fact, home is exactly where it's suited, as terry cloth is excellent as a loungewear fabric too, hence why we've incorporated it into a number of leisure silhouettes this season, such as hoodies, lounge tees, polos and pyjama shirts in both grey and navy options. We've used an extra dense pile of looped cotton to create a peerless fabric that is unbelievably soft, hence great for chilling out in.
