We recently collaborated with Jonathan Lawes, a British artist and designer renowned for his vibrant silkscreen prints that masterfully intertwine colour and pattern. Born in 1986 in Hannover, Germany, Jonathan's artistic journey began with a BA in Printed Textiles & Surface Pattern Design from Leeds Arts University in 2009. Post-graduation, he immersed himself in Berlin's dynamic art scene for nearly a decade before returning to the UK in 2018 to further evolve his practice.
Take Five With Artist Jonathan Lawes
Residing in southeast London, Jonathan's work is distinguished by its graphic precision and an intrinsic passion for geometry and form, which is what drew us to him in the first place. His creative process is deeply rooted in the silkscreen printing technique, where he meticulously layers shapes and hues to craft abstract compositions. This method allows for a harmonious blend of opaque and transparent elements, resulting in pieces that are both dynamic and contemplative.
When we first set eyes on Jonathan’s work, it was clear that he had a unique expertise in colour theory. He possesses an acute sensitivity to the interplay of colours, using them to evoke emotions and guide the viewer's experience. Each palette is thoughtfully selected, ensuring that the chromatic relationships enhance the overall composition and depth of the artwork.
Pattern, another cornerstone of Jonathan's artistry, is explored through the repetition and juxtaposition of forms. His designs often feature rhythmic patterns that create a sense of movement and balance, inviting viewers to engage with the artwork on a deeper level. This fascination with pattern not only reflects his background in surface design but also underscores his commitment to exploring the endless possibilities within abstract art.

As well as turning him into a human clothes horse when we met Jonathan at his studio, we also cornered and doorstepped him with five rapid-fire questions to cut straight to the chase:
