Ever since 1958, when Snow Peak was founded, the Japanese company has been crafting some of the very best outdoor equipment, designed for life and to perform in the most challenging of conditions. The story begins with founder Yukio Yamai, an accomplished mountaineer, who frustrated with the equipment on the market, decided to create his own line of superior climbing gear. Yamai would test his physical and mental fortitude on Mount Tanigawa, known worldwide as one of the most challenging peaks (locals have christened it ‘Mountain of Death’) to summit. His mission was to inspire people to reconnect with nature, lovingly crafting the equipment that would forge this bond with the natural world.
Snow Peak's home is in Sanjo City, in the Chūetsu region of Niigata Prefecture, which is also known locally as the hardware town for its history of fine crafted metalwork. Nestled into a range of mountains that rise up to an altitude of 8,051 ft, this rich environment evokes a strong connection to the outdoors and inspires all of Snow Peak’s products and creativity.
Presently, the next generation of the Yamai legacy is being brought forward by Yukio's granddaughter, Lisa Yamai, who in 2014 launched Snow Peak Apparel, inspiring a new generation of outdoor enthusiasts thanks to its beautifully considered designs. Even if you’re not the outdoorsy type, you’ll find plenty in Snow Peak’s collection to enjoy at home.
