It’s a question we hope we won’t have to ask ourselves for much longer - “What am I going to wear today given I’ve got nowhere to go and no one to see?” We feel you. When ‘going to work’ consists of swinging your largely redundant legs out of bed and tackling the modern day gauntlet that is getting to the sofa (read home office), you’d be forgiven for not making an effort with your wardrobe. And even when you do finally venture outside to remind yourself what cold hard oxygen tastes like, it feels more chore than treat. It’s even hard to look forward to the weekend when you don’t even know what day it is.
So in order to banish existential angst from your daily life and signal a return to at least a modicum of self-respect, we’ve highlighted four different lockdown looks that will make putting clothes on fun again.
Just Lounging
COMFORT JERSEY SHORTS |
HALF ZIP SWEATSHIRT |
HOUSE SWEATSHIRT |
So you’ve cleared the diary of “work calls” or have simply come to the realisation that you have sweet FA to do once again. May we suggest working on your horizontal pose? We kid. In the last nine months, we’ve all appreciated the value of fine loungewear, which has become a bona fide menswear genre all of its own. Perhaps it’s the fact that it has grown up from its sportswear origins, becoming infinitely more presentable in smarter social situations, and in some cases, even work ones. Oliver Spencer’s loungewear consists of a selection of organic cotton and the super-soft supima cotton fabrics, ensuring maximum comfort on the one hand, while the classic athletic silhouettes provide heritage shapes on the other. Our hoodies and sweats can hold their own on a casual work call but are equally as at home levitating on the sofa.
Around the block
HUNSTON GILET Was £239 | Now £120 |
BLENHEIM JUMPER Was £179 | Now £144 |
JUDO TROUSERS Was £189 | Now £152 |
The daily walk poses all manner of challenges, not least avoiding the thousands of other human beings doing the only lap of city shrubbery in your local neighbourhood. Nevertheless, you want to be both presentable and comfortable should you build a head of steam up so as to morph your walk into actual exercise. Hence, go quick and go light with a technical outer layer in the form of our Hunston Gilet in Pino Ochre. It's cut from a water repellent Italian cloth features lightweight padding to keep your torso warm, even if you're moving at a snail's pace. Slip it over a mid-weight knit such as one of our Blenheim jumpers and finish the look with some judo trousers.
Business as Usual
SOLMS JACKET Was £389 | Now £233 |
JUDO TROUSERS Was £119 | Now £84 |
TALBOT ROLL NECK Was £189 | Now £113 |
With no office to peacock around in, no co-workers to blind with your sartorial prowess, and no boss to impress with your professional manner, one wonders why you need get dressed for working from home at all? Well there's that little thing called self-respect and that other little thing called Zoom, both of which conspire to demand some sartorial knowhow. Granted, you could always just get dressed from the waist up, but in our experience, pyjama bottoms aren't conducive to maintaining a killer business attitude. But why not meet somewhere in the middle? Oliver Spencer's suiting, as you probably know by now, is unstructured and softly tailored, giving the jackets a casual drape and the trousers a more than comfortable finish. Take our Solms jacket in Wickham Oatmeal, for example: made from an ecological Portuguese, blended-undyed, houndstooth wool, giving it a beautiful drape and a subtle textural finish. Great as a versatile separate to include in your casual tailoring arsenal or as a smart two-piece with our Judo trousers.
Living for the Weekend (wait, there’s a weekend?)
BERMONDSEY BOMBER JACKET Was £379 | Now £190 |
DRAWSTRING TROUSERS Was £179 | Now £144 |
BOX T-SHIRT Was £79 | Now £40 |
If you can't tell Wednesday from Friday from Monday at the moment, fret not - you're not alone. The lockdown week is a blur, and the once talismanic weekend just isn't the same beacon of hope and hedonism it once was. Nevertheless, it's a good idea to change the script on your wardrobe and create some kind of style delineation so that when Saturday comes you know you can switch off your work brain and recharge your batteries. With that said, nothing says off-duty more than a bomber jacket. Our Bermondsey Bomber in Tamworth Midnight is a minimal style that we've cut in a really unique wool-blend seersucker cloth from Italy, so it has that lovely subtle dimpled finish. It forms a great base to bounce patterns off, especially checks. Our Lawley charcoal drawstring trousers are a great weekend option as they deftly straddle smart and casual.
