Behind The Seams: The Shawcross Jacket

Behind The Seams: The Shawcross Jacket

It's round about this time of year that we start to require a slightly heavier weight of short jacket versus the linen pieces we've been wearing for the last couple of months. The days are getting shorter and cooler days start peppering the weeks so a cropped jacket that retains a bit of heat without being bulky is just the ticket. That was the blueprint for this season's Shawcross jacket which we have crafted in a trio of beautifully soft autumnal fabrics.

First up is a delicious needlecord style crafted from premium cotton that we have produced in a beige tone as well as a rich navy. The jacket riffs on classic four-pocket field jackets, hence has a natural military shape to it thanks to the squared off hem,  which gives it a casually masculine appeal. Besides the needlecord fabric, the most noticeable details about the Shawcross jacket are of course the four pockets on the front. Original military field jackets would typically have a similar configuration of bellows pockets, identified by a pleat down the middle which would allow the pocket to expand, making it easy to get your hand in. Inspired by this design, we've opted for bellows pockets with a twist, effectively inverting them, which creates a more dimensional effect while allowing the pockets to remain quite flat on the garment. The contrast buttons add to the textural look of the jacket.

Styling this jacket couldn't be easier: the beige option can act as a crisp, clean canvas to contrast darker or more colourful tones, or you can complement it with similar soft shades for more of a tonal outfit. Similarly with the navy style, pair it with cream trousers and a Breton tee for a nautical-inspired look. You can even go the whole hog and turn the jacket into a pseudo modern suit, since we have also created belted pleated trousers in both colours.

As well as the needlecord, we have also crafted the Shawcross jacket in beautifully textural charcoal virgin wool blend that features a subtle chalkstripe. Slightly smarter than the needlecord styles (pinstripes always add a sense of uniformity to a garment), it can be paired with our wide-leg Orsman trousers in the same fabric, creating a contemporary take on the modern suit. You can just as easily wear it as a separate with our navy needlecord trousers for a smart-casual aesthetic perfect for weekend fits.
