Oliver Spencer X Wolfgang Buttress | Reverie

Oliver Spencer are excited to announce a collaboration with award-winning artist Wolfgang Buttress; an installation of a multi-sensory sculpture within their Soho store at 81 Berwick Street, London. ‘Reverie’ is an immersive experience that invites the public to explore and sit within a sculptural environment planted with wildflowers and Flax (linen).


Artist Wolfgang Buttress worked with acoustic engineers Hoare Lea and Outboard to create an integrated 3D spacial soundscape that can be heard and experienced within the sculpture. The soundscape that you hear include some new vibrational sounds and communications of the honey bee recorded and discovered by scientist Dr. Martin Bencsik’s team which include: The begging signal, Quacking, tooting, whooping, waggle dance.

Wolfgang and Dr. Bencsik established that the European Honey Bee hums in the key of C. Working with the bee communications Wolfgang has  curated an ever evolving soundscape which can be experienced within and around the sculpture.


The sculpture which is planted with wildflowers, flax and grasses which are essential for the health and wellbeing of the bee and pollinators. The bees are acutely tuned to their environment, they can be seen as a sentinel of the earth. As mass farming has spread across the countryside, the bees have been forced to move closer to cities where more bio-diversity can be found. The importance of planting wildflowers and looking after our green spaces is crucial to the keeping an environment in which the bee can thrive.



Wolfgang and Oliver also collaborated with skin care specialists, Haeckels, to create a unique scent. For Reverie, they have created a scent based on a wildflower meadow in the British countryside. Using Flax (linen), wild cliff  grasses, parsley, honey extract, rosemary and other all natural ingredients sourced by their team in Margate.

In essence, this scent is representational of clothing in its rawest form; when the materials we use to make clothing is at the beginning of life.

For years ‘fast fashion’ has dominated the high street and has convinced the consumer to change their spending habits to buy more but spend less. As appealing as this can be, it forces bad decisions to be made when producing such cheap garments in high quantities - leading to large amounts of waste. The consumer won’t change if cheap clothing is so readily available, therefore it is down to the industry to change their habits to set a higher standard for everyone else.

It is hard to make these changes quickly but small things can be done to make a big difference. At Oliver Spencer, we are striving to do what we can to make a change. We have switched over to green energy suppliers at  all our locations, have reduced our use of single use plastics and have begun to remove excess tissue and paper from our wrapped garments. Our range of organic and linen garments are a good way to begin to change your habits and help support a growing industry of ethically and responsibly sourced garments.

Reverie is open to the public for four weeks from Thursday the 17th of May.
