The Feature: Winter Coats - A Guide

We hardly need to extol the virtues of a great winter coat. One of the most visible garments a man owns, and on frequent rotation for half the year.

Quality counts. You want fabrics that will stand up to repeated wear. A lower quality fabric often looks fine on the rail, but after a month or two loses its lustre and thickness. The same goes for the level of manufacturing: outerwear is your first line of defence against the elements, so it needs to be well-made to stand up to the onslaught. Oli takes design inspiration from traditional workwear in this respect: garments exist to serve a purpose as well as to look good. All the coats featured in this post are made by hand in our UK factory to the highest standards, designed to wear well and keep you snug year after year.

The Oliver Spencer AW16 collection caters for a range of tastes and temperatures. We'll start at the lighter end of the spectrum.

As Autumn begins the slide to Winter, you may find it’s still not cold enough for a full-length coat. That’s where the Portobello Jacket comes in. Cut from pure wool, the Portobello Jacket is robust and long-lasting, while being short enough to throw over a lightweight knit on one of those rare sunny autumn days.

Oli picked out this rich charcoal grey for AW16 – try it paired with autumnal reds or caramels – or there’s the more classic option of the same fabric in deep navy.

Next up, the Grandpa Coat: a long-time Oliver Spencer favourite. Cut to a contemporary ¾ length design, it’s a practical, stylish coat, and versatile enough to be dressed up for work or layered over knits or sweats for a more casual look. This season, we’re offering the two pure wool fabric options above: Barrow Midnight and Barrow Charcoal.

Then the bleak midwinter strikes. Subzero mornings, malicious windchill. So bring out the big gun – that is, the Big Coat. Cut from an animal-friendly artificial astrakhan, the Big Coat is full-length and double breasted. Button it up to the neck and let the winds do their worst. Here it is worn in magisterial style in our AW16 show:

For a less formal winter defence, the Sleaford Parka is your go-to. This is a tough, warm, wool coat that will stand up to the elements in style. Classic mod styling in a heavy wool cloth. We love the bold check of our Huxley Navy wool fabric. Equipped with hood, concealed double zip and deep, deep pockets, this is a coat to hunker down in.

A new style for AW16 is our Photographer's Jacket. Inspired by MOD-issued clothing, this oversized piece has distinctive large pockets for those who want to make a statement this winter. Available in Tiverton Indigo (worn below) and water resistant Lawford Navy.

From our earliest days, we’ve adopted a business model that incorporates environmental and social responsibility at every step. Each season, we increase the proportion of ecological, organic and recycled fabrics and will continue to do so until they represent the entirety of our collections. We also ring-fence a proportion of our revenue to put towards planting trees with the Woodland Trust.
